Virtually every hymnal in America today contains hymn tunes and harmonizations by Calvin Hampton. In addition to hymns and other service music (including dozens of organ works and choral anthems), Hampton also wrote important works for orchestral and chamber forces. His Concerto for Saxophone Quartet and Orchestra was performed by the New York Philharmonic and is one of a series of works that he wrote for saxophone quartet. His Concerto for Two Violins and Orchestra, left uncompleted at the time of his death, was completed after by Chris DeBlasio (who also died of AIDS) and Allison Sniffin. Many of his organ works were commissioned for new organs, such as Music for an Important Occasion, the first commissioned work for the concert organ in Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center. There are also two experimental works for pianos and electronic tape which were recorded by CBS Records during the 1960s.

He was born on October 3, 1941 in Philadelphia and named Ernest Evans. In June of 1959, at the age of 18 and sporting a new name, Chubby recorded his first hit; a novelty record called THE CLASS. He just made it into the Top 40, at #38, with this recording of his imitations of Fats Domino, The Coasters, Elvis Presley, and The Chipmunks. Less than one year later Chubby hit big with his #1 hit THE TWIST. THE TWIST remained at #1 for an impressive 15 weeks and became a huge dance craze. In the year that followed he topped the charts at #1 two more times, in January of 1961 with THE PONY, and again in November of 1961 with a reissue of THE TWIST, this time riding the #1 spot for an incredible 18 weeks. One month later, in December, he scored the #21 spot with a Christmas recording, a duet with Bobby Rydell, JINGLE BELL ROCK. Between the years 1959 and 1965 Chubby Checker continued to release a string of hits every couple of months. Now, with an arsenal of twenty two Top 40 hits, Chubby and his band continue to delight audiences around the world at festivals, theaters and arenas. They also have become a big draw for corporate America and are booked regularly at corporate events

A few years later drummer and prime mover Jon Hiseman recruited keyboard player Don Airey (DEEP PURPLE), vocalist Mike Starrs, guitar player Gary Moore (ex-THIN LIZZY) and bass-player John Mole in order to form COLOSSEUM II. In ’76 their first LP titled "Strange New Flesh" came out; it has some fine moments but sounds a bit precarious. After the band dropped the singer the chemistry was there: an instrumental fusion of jazz, rock, symphonic and classic, to be found on the excellent albums "Electric Savage" (’77) and "Wardance" (’78). Both records contain 8 captivating and alternating compositions with powerful and inventive drums, solid and propulsive bass play and tasteful colouring of the keyboards (Hammond organ, Fender Rhodes piano, Solina string-ensemble). But the focus is on Gary Moore’s guitarplay: some Spanish guitar and many fiery and biting electric guitar solo’s and exciting interplay with Don Airey’s dazzling Minimoog flights. Gary Moore sounded far more creative and subtle (a kind of harder-edged blend of HACKETT and Jan AKKERMAN) than he ever did with THIN LIZZY or his later "bluesy period". Import from Japan; includes obi strip.
