| Live recording from The Blackhawk, San Francisco, 1961.To quote John Hammond`s liner notes, "The Ahmad Jamal Trio far transcends the jazz world, and the fact it has been consistently popular has caused the self-styled jazz criticsto polish off epithets as `commercial` and `cocktail music`. Pay them no mind, and listen to some of the most sensitive, delicate and subtle music in jazz history".

| Audio Fidelity Stereodisc. A virtuoso on the trumpet, Al Hirt was often "overqualified" for the Dixieland and pop music that he performed. He studied classical trumpet at the Cincinnati Conservatory (1940-1943) and was influenced by the playing of Harry James. He freelanced in swing bands (including both Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, and Ray McKinley) before returning to New Orleans in the late '40s and becoming involved in the Dixieland movement. He teamed up with clarinetist Pete Fountain on an occasional basis from 1955 on, and became famous by the end of the decade. An outstanding technician with a wide range, along with a propensity for playing far too many notes, Hirt had some instrumental pop hits in the 1960s. He also recorded swing and country music, but mostly stuck to Dixieland in his live performances. He remained a household name throughout his career, although one often feels that he could have done so much more with his talent. Hirt's early Audiofidelity recordings (1958-1960) and collaborations with Fountain are the most rewarding of his long career; he died at his home in New Orleans on April 27, 1999. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

| Still sealed in shrink wrap. Born: Los Angeles, California - January 8, 1942. An almost completely self-taught drummer, Bill attributes his early interest in the drums to Shelly Manne's playing on the movie soundtrack of "The Man with the Golden Arm." Before that he had taken piano lessons and studied the tenor saxophone. His father's extensive record collection gave him the opportunity to hear and learn songs, and he still hears the form of the music first. From 1959 to the present, Goodwin has been a professional drummer, playing with Bill Evans, Dexter Gordon, Art Pepper, Jim Hall, George Shearing and Bobby Hutcherson, and singers such as June Christy, Joe Williams, Tony Bennett and Manhattan Transfer. He also played with Jefferson Airplane on the album "Crown Of Creation."

| Because he was involved in many commercial recording projects from the mid-'70s through the early '80s and on an occasional basis ever since, some observers wrote Ernie Watts off prematurely as a pop/R&B tenorman. Actually, Watts' main hero has always been John Coltrane, and his later work reveals him to be an intense and masterful jazz improviser who has developed his own sheets-of-sound approach along with a distinctive and soulful sound. | Remember you can request pictures of the album cover and the vinyl. This includes A Hundred Pounds of Clay and Tower of Strength. Swing, Big Band Open but in the shrink wrap. Remember: request a picture of the album or vinyl. Kaye's band was a textbook example of "sweet" dance bands: large groups whose arrangements seldom swung in the true sense, but were very popular among those who enjoyed overly sentimental light pop and novelty tunes. Kaye began building his reputation in college, then became a hit on radio in Cincinnati. He moved to Pittsburgh and eventually became a national staple. His radio show Sunday Serenade was a huge hit in the '40s and '50s. Kaye had many pop hits, some of them adapted for Broadway shows.

| Kazumi Watanabe has for the past 20 years been one of the top guitarists in fusion, a rock-oriented player whose furious power does not mask a creative imagination. Watanabe studied guitar at Tokyo's Yamaha Music School and he was a recording artist while still a teenager. In 1979, he formed the group Kylyn and, in 1983, he put together the Mobo band.

| Marc Johnson gained his initial reputation as a member of Bill Evans' last rhythm section and his work with Bass Desires (a group featuring both Bill Frisell and John Scofield on guitars) showed off his versatility. While at North Texas State University, Johnson played with a group that included Lyle Mays. He was with Woody Herman's Orchestra (1977), Bill Evans (1978-1980), Stan Getz (1981-1982), and John Abercrombie (1983) before forming Bass Desires (1985). The latter group recorded two intriguing albums for ECM. In 1989, Marc Johnson made a series of duets with various all-stars for EmArcy and in 1993, he led the group Right Brain Patrol, a trio with guitarist Ben Monder and percussionist Arto Tuncboyaci that recorded for JMT. He landed at Verve for 1997's The Sound of Summer Running; If Trees Could Fly followed two years later. Promotional release. 12" EP. White die-cut cover.

| Original Blue Note release on blue and white label with deep groove. Some crackling and popping in some areas, but the music is fantastic - Side One could be rated VG/VG+ and Side Two could be rated VG+/NM. Ring wear and seam splitting with name written on back of jacket. If you can get past the look of the jacket, you'll appreciate the great music on the vinyl.

| Still sealed in shrink wrap this Vinyl Record will play like it was new. Clarinetist Pee Wee Russell is one of those unique players that comes along only once in a lifetime. Known as much for his unique style consisting of squeaks and overtones as for the mournful expression on his face, Pee Wee was born in St. Louis and began playing clarinet in Muskogee Oklahoma which is famous for giving the jazz world pianist Jay McShann. Pee Wee's career in jazz began in the early 1920's in Chicago with Bix Beiderbecke and Frank Trumbauer, cutting his first sides with Red Nichols and his Five Pennies in 1929. The band also featured Glenn Miller and Jack Teagarden on trombones, Bud Freeman on tenor sax and Eddie Condon on guitar. By the early 1930's, Pee Wee moved to New York where he found a steady home in the bands of Eddie Condon and jamming with a roster of hot jazz players including Bobby Hackett, Red Allen, Edmond Hall, Hot Lips Page, Jack Bland, Buster Bailey and Vic Dickenson. Pee Wee played in the all-star band put together by Eddie Condon for Fats Waller's Carnegie Hall debut in 1942, which also included Bud Freeman and Gene Krupa. Throughout most of the 1940's Pee Wee could be found playing at Nick's, the popular Greenwich Village restaurant/club that was a mainstay for hot musicians as the swing era evolved into bop. During this period Pee Wee was recording sides for Milt Gabler's Commodore label under his own name and as a sideman. In 1951 after years of heavy drinking and not taking care of himself, Russell fell ill and so near death that a benefit concert was held in his honor. After weeks in the hospital, including several blood transfusions and three square meals a day, Pee Wee returned to New York and played a well received set at the Newport Jazz Festival with Thelonious Monk thus proving his talent for all music whether traditional or bop. Pee Wee was a consummate small group player. Although he was offered jobs with many of the top-name big bands of the day, Pee Wee preferred the small group swing that he had been playing all his life, and with the exception of a short stint with Bobby Hackett's Big Band played exclusively in small groups. Russell was a mainstay in traditional jazz bands along the east coast until his death in 1969.

A rock, R&B, and jazz legend, Butera is a towering crossover figure at the saxophone and as a bandleader." Ring wear and seam split.

| The conservative Scott Hamilton actually caused a bit of a stir when he appeared on the scene in the mid 1970s. He came along at a time when his mainstream melodicism and swing, derived from the pre-bopy triumvirate of Hawkins, Young, and Webster, swam against the prevailing tide of self-conscious exploration and fusion. Nonetheless, Hamilton did not represent a mere trend; rather, he was a fully formed stylist with an individual sound. Hamilton (b. 9/12/54, Providence, RI) began focusing on tenor sax at age 16, gaining experience in hometown organ combos. In 1976, he moved to New York, where he soon joined up with Benny Goodman (1976-1978); since then he has performed primarily as a leader, occasionally sharing the stage with Ruby Braff, Rosemary Clooney, The Concord Jazz All-Stars, and the Newport Jazz Festival All Stars. His many recordings as a leader for Concord include collaborations with Gerry Mulligan, Flip Phillips, and Dave McKenna.

| Stanley Jordan's discovery in the early '80s rightfully earned a lot of headlines in the jazz world for he came up with a new way of playing guitar. Although he was not the first to use tapping, Jordan's extensive expertise gave him the ability to play two completely independent lines on the guitar (as if it were a keyboard) or, when he wanted, two guitars at a time. He had originally studied piano, although he switched to guitar when he was 11. After graduating from Princeton in 1981, Jordan played for a time on the streets of New York. Soon he was discovered, had the opportunity to play with Benny Carter and Dizzy Gillespie and, after recording a solo album for his own Tangent label, signed with Blue Note.

| A superior drummer equally at ease driving a big band or playing in small mainstream combos, Jake Hanna has been a strong asset to a countless number of sessions. He started out playing locally in Boston and worked with Toshiko Akiyoshi (1957), Maynard Ferguson (1958), as the house drummer at Storyville in Boston, with Marian McPartland (1959-1961), and most significantly with the Woody Herman Orchestra (1962-1964). As a studio musician, he was a regular member of the Merv Griffin television program's big band (1964-1975), moving with the show to Los Angeles (1970) where he remained. Hanna co-led a group with Carl Fontana that recorded for Concord in 1975, played with Supersax, and went on to appear on many mainstream and swing sessions, becoming a fixture at jazz parties and festivals. He has recorded many dates (mostly as a sideman) for Concord.

| Oscar Peterson was born on August 15, 1925, in Montreal. His parents were immigrants from the British West Indies and the Virgin Islands. His father, Daniel Peterson, met his mother, Olivia Johnson in Montreal where she had landed as a cook and housekeeper for an English family. They decided to remain in Canada, get married and start a family. Oscar was the fourth of five children in the Peterson house-hold, and their father wasted no time in starting each member of the Peterson clan on the piano. They were later farmed out to various teachers when they surpassed father Peterson's teaching capabilities. Oscar Peterson studied with the gifted Hungarian classical pianist, Paul deMarky, and a warm respectful musical and personal friendship developed between the two. During this period, Peterson won the Ken Soble amateur show and made various appearances on local radio shows as guest artist and appeared on national radio shows such as the Happy Gang, and the Listen Hour. Shortly after this period, he was signed by RCA Victor Records and made varied tours across Canada playing concerts. At the same point in time, Peterson did a stint in the Johnny Holmes Orchestra as a featured pianist.

| Winter first came to public prominence in 1961 as the winner of a collegiate jazz festival held at Notre Dame University; one of that event's judges, John Hammond, subsequently signed the group to a Columbia recording contract. In 1962, the band was sent on a State Department tour of Latin America. That venture planted the first seeds of change in Winter's concept. In 1967, he abandoned traditional jazz format in favor of a lineup that featured non-Western instruments. The Paul Winter Consort, as the band was renamed, became one of the earliest exponents of world music, combining elements from various African, Asian, and South American cultures with jazz.
